How to block an email address in Yahoo! Mail

August 27, 2009, Category: Email

There are times when you do not want to receive email from a particular email address due to various reasons. Yahoo! Mail supports blocking of an email address so that you’ll not receive any email from that sender. In fact, the free version of Yahoo! Mail allows you to block email Yahoo! Mail - block an email address from as many as 500 email addresses. Once you block email from an email address, all emails coming from that address will automatically get deleted from your Yahoo! Mail account and you’ll not even be shown those deleted emails! A big relief from some unwanted emails because it will save you from the trouble of individually deleting each single irritating mail from a troublesome sender and this unpleasant work will happily be done by Yahoo! Mail automatically by deleting all emails coming from that sender.

To block all emails from a particular email address in Yahoo! Mail, proceed as under:

If you are using the All-New Mail version of Yahoo! Mail (i.e., latest version), click on Options on the navigation bar and then select Mail Options (see the image below):

On the other hand, if you are using the Classic version of Yahoo! Mail, click on Options and then select Mail Options (as shown in the figure below):

Yahoo! Mail - Classic version - block an email address

Remaining procedure for blocking an email address is same for both the versions of Yahoo! Mail as outlined below:

After clicking on the Mail Options as above, in the new screen that appears, click on the Spam option. Now, go to the Blocked Email Addresses section. In the text-box with the title of Add a blocked address, add the email address which you want to block; and then click on the Add button. This email address will now appear in the list-box showing all the blocked email addresses alongwith the total number of email addresses blocked (for example, “7 of 500 used”, which means that you have now blocked 7 addresses from out of a permissible limit of 500 addresses which can be blocked).

That’s it! Now, you’ll not receive mail from this blocked email address and it will be automatically deleted in future.

At a later stage, if you want to remove such email address from the blocked email address list, select the email address from the aforesaid list-box which shows the blocked email addresses and then click on the Remove button. The selected email address will now be unblocked which means now you can receive email from this address.

Please note that you need not use the method of blocking an email address for the spam mail, as Yahoo! Mail will generally deal with that issue automatically. If you feel that a particular mail should have been marked as spam but has not been done so, you can mark it as spam using the Spam button while reading the mail and next time Yahoo! Mail will try to learn from that process. Marking an email address as a blocked address is not a good protection against spam mail because people sending spam mail are well-known to be sending such mail from different email addresses by continuously changing the email address and you’ll find it very difficult to keep blocking all such addresses. In any case, Yahoo! Mail will already be successfully marking spam mail as such. My experience with Yahoo! Mail has been that its spam mail marking is reasonably efficient. The above method of blocking an email address is generally useful where a particular sender (whom you may even be knowing) is sending you unnecessary emails in an irritating manner.
