How to import contacts from Yahoo! Mail or Gmail into your Hotmail account

Importing contact into Hotmail account from Gmail or Yahoo! Mail Many people maintain two or more email accounts. After using such different email accounts for some time, the contacts lists grow in size and you may like to combine the two lists in one or the other account. This requires importing your contacts from one email account to another. This article deals with one such issue. In case you want to import your contacts from your Yahoo! Mail account or from your Gmail account into your Windows Live Hotmail account, you have to proceed as under (you’ll have to follow more or less the same steps if you want to import your contacts from other email services, such as AOL, into your Hotmail account):

(1) Export your contacts from Yahoo! Mail or Gmail into a file:

First login to your Gmail account or the Yahoo! Mail account, as the case may be.

(A) Exporting your contacts from Gmail:

  • Login to your Gmail account from which you want to import the contacts.
  • Click Contacts on the side of any page of Gmail account. See the image below:

  • Now, click Export at the right-top of your Contacts list (see image).

  • You’ll see the following screen:

  • Select whether you want to export all contacts or only one specific group.
  • Under Which export format, select the option which says “Outlook CSV format (for importing into Outlook or another application)“.
  • Click Export.
  • Save the exported file to your computer with a convenient name (with the .CSV extension in the Microsoft Office Excel Comma Separated Values file type).
  • Your contacts from this Gmail account are now ready to be imported into your Windows Live Hotmail account. Log out from this Gmail account and then proceed to the second part.

(B) Exporting your contacts from Yahoo! Mail:

  • Login to your Yahoo! Mail account from which you want to import the contacts.
  • Click Contacts link in the side-bar or at the top-bar, as the case may be.
  • Now, under Contacts bar that appears, click Tools and then from the popup menu, select Export. See, figure below:

  • Following screen will appear:

  • Click the Export Now button appearing against the option Microsoft Outlook.
  • Now, save the exported file to your computer with a convenient name (with the .CSV extension in the Microsoft Office Excel Comma Separated Values file type).
  • Your contacts from this Yahoo! Mail account are now ready to be imported into your Windows Live Hotmail account. Log out from this Gmail account and then proceed to the second part.

Once you have exported the above-mentioned .CSV file from your Yahoo! Mail or Gmail account, as the case may be, now move to the next step.

(2) Import the contacts into Windows Live Hotmail account from the above exported file:
  • Now, login to your Windows Live Hotmail account into which you want to import the above contacts which you have just exported from your Yahoo! mail account or the Gmail account.
  • Click Contact list link in the side-bar.
  • On the next screen, click Manage button and then select Import option that appears in the popup menu (see figure below):

  • Click the appropriate option. If you are exporting contacts from Gmail, then select “Gmail (using Outlook CSV format)”. And, if you are exporting your contacts from your Yahoo! Mail, then select the option “Yahoo! Mail (using Outlook CSV format and comma separated)”.
  • Now, in the next step, under the heading “Choose the file to import”, click on Choose File button. From the “Open” file dialog box that appears, select the .CSV file that you’ve saved while exporting contacts from Gmail or Yahoo! Mail.
  • Finally, click the Import contacts button.
  • Your contacts from Yahoo! Mail or GMail, as the case may be, will now get imported into your Windows Live Hotmail Mail account.

In this manner, following the above simple steps, you can import your contacts into Hotmail account.
