Yahoo! Mail attachment limit up from 10MB to 25MB

Yahoo! Mail - attachment size limit increased up to 25MB It is a good news for about 300 million users of Yahoo! Mail. Last week, Yahoo! Mail increased the limit of attachment to an email for the free Yahoo! Mail users from 10MB to 25MB. It should now be possible for you to send bigger files with your Yahoo! Mail.

Google had already increased the limit of attachment to Gmail up to 25MB. Look, what Google used to say about its 25MB attachment limit:

“With Gmail, you can send and receive messages up to 25 megabytes (MB) in size.

Please note that you may not be able to send larger attachments to contacts who use other email services with smaller attachment limits. If your attachment bounces, you should invite them to Gmail.”

Mark the last sentence. It was a way to entice new users to Gmail. So, if your Gmail attachment of up to 25MB cannot get delivered to other email services (read Yahoo! Mail) due to their smaller attachment limits, invite the recipient to Gmail!!! And, it actually used to happen in practice. Last month, I had to send an important file with the size of about 22MB. Initially I tried to send it as an attachment with Yahoo! Mail, not realizing that my attached file was much bigger than the 10MB limit. So, after about 10MB got uploaded, I got error message and the email got aborted. So, I divided the attached file in two parts and tried to send it again. Again it bounced, as each of the two files was still bigger than 10MB limit. Perhaps my maths knowledge was poor. I again sent the file by dividing it in three parts. This whole process took more than one hour and resulted in a lot of frustration because I got error messages only after the process was mid-way through. Later in the day, I realized that I should have sent the same file in a single peace of full 22MB through my Gmail account instead of sending it through Yahoo! Mail account. Thus, this is how a Yahoo! Mail user gets enticed to Gmail and if the recipient is also a Yahoo! Mail user, she will also think seriously of moving to Gmail in such a situation. Remember, just a few days back, Google had allowed millions of its existing Gmail users to import their emails and contacts from their email accounts with rival email service providers such Yahoo!, Microsoft, AOL, etc. (see my earlier article Import mail and contacts into Gmail from other accounts).

Now, with last week’s change of policy, Yahoo! has corrected its mistake. Yahoo! Mail is the largest web-based email provider with about 300 million user base. Hotmail (now part of Windows Live) is next. Gmail is far behind Yahoo! Mail in the number of users. So, if Yahoo! does not keep pace with Gmail, over a period of time, its user base would shrink. It may be noted that Yahoo! Mail offers a premium email service (Yahoo! Mail Plus) on payment basis and also offers a free email service which is the most popular but has some limited features vis-à-vis its premium service. Gmail, on the other hand, is totally free for all its users. Google, with its deep pockets, can afford to provide more features to all its users and it is trying to increase its user base as fast as possible. Therefore, Yahoo! Mail has to ensure that at least it does not lag behind Gmail in providing minimum expected features. In fact, Yahoo! has perhaps realized it; that’s while increasing attachment limit up to 25MB, it reasoned as under:

Increased Attachment Limits – With more people sharing and receiving larger amounts of photos everyday, Yahoo! Mail has extended the attachment limit for photos and files up to 25MB (up from 10MB) (available in New Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Mail Classic).”

Therefore, it appears that Yahoo! has perhaps realized that larger file attachments are the order of the day.
