Since yesterday, Google Translator Toolkit has added support for 285 new languages in one go. Thus, the number of languages now supported for the purpose of translation jumps to 345. It includes almost all major languages used in the world. Many minority and regional languages have also been supported.
However, it appears that these new languages will initially be supported only as a target language for a translation. This means that you can translate any text or document into such new languages but at this stage you cannot translate any text or document from these new languages. You can check the list of the languages now supported for the Google Translator Toolkit.
For translating a document from one language to another, you must have a source language and a target language. At this stage, the number of source languages (from which a document can be translated) supported by Google Translator Toolkit is 33. But, as mentioned above, the number of target languages (into which a document can be translated) supported by the Toolkit has now become 345.
This is definitely going to help spread the power of knowledge, especially that available on the Internet, to more and more people. It will also help the cause of preserving minority or regional languages.
