Wikipedia is ads-free and it will continue to be so. It had a goal of raising funds to the tune of $7.5 million through donations, and on the last day of the year 2009, it achieved this goal. Wikipedia has a huge collection of articles (more than 3 million articles in English language alone) that are entirely written / edited by hundreds of thousands of volunteers / users. However, like any other web-based organization, it has to incur web hosting and bandwidth expenses and moreover, it has about 35 employees. Wikipedia has successfully maintained the tradition of meeting its expenses through donations by users, instead of showing advertisements on its site.
If you had visited Wikipedia during last few weeks, you must have noticed a personal appeal from its founder Jimmy Wales for donations. Now, this fundraising goal has been achieved by Wikipedia as of December 31, 2009.
More than 340 million people use Wikipedia every month. Today, it is the fifth most-read website in the world. It is one of the most authentic sources of information on the Internet. The best part is that it is continuously updated by volunteers and is therefore always seen to be up-to-date. Started in the year 2001, Wikipedia has achieved unparalleled success and it continues to grow rapidly. And, it is significant that it has achieved its success without becoming a commercial organization and without raising money through ads.
