Part 1 of this series on All about Cookies covered the basic characteristics of cookies. Part 2 covered the procedure for blocking or deleting cookies in Internet Explorer.

Blocking or deleting cookies in Mozilla Firefox

(A) Blocking cookies:

To change your preferences as to how to block different types of cookies in Mozilla Firefox (version 3.5), proceed as under:

In Firefox, click on Tools menu and then click on Options. On the Options window that appears, click on the Privacy tab. The relevant extract of the screen you get is shown below:

On this screen, select the appropriate options whether you want to accept cookies from the websites and also whether you want to accept the third-party cookies. You can also select the appropriate option as to when the cookies will expire, i.e., whether they will be kept on your computer till they expire or whether the cookies will be kept only till Firefox is kept open for one session or else whether each time a cookie is saved you should be asked the time upto which it is to be kept on your computer.

Moreover, you can also specify the options for allowing cookies for each website separately. For this, click on the Exceptions button on the above screen, and you are presented with the following window with the title of Exceptions – Cookies:

Control blocking of cookies for individual site in Firefox

On this window, you can choose for which websites you want to always allow cookies and for which websites you want to never allow cookies. Or else, you can choose for which websites only sessions cookies are allowed. At a later stage, you can use this window to change your options set for each webiste.

Thus, Firefox allows you to have greater flexibility in the matter of blocking or allowing cookies in different ways and you can control this behavior for each website separately.

(B) Deleting cookies:

To delete the existing cookies in Mozilla Firefox, click on Tools menu and then click on Options. On the Options window that appears, click on the Privacy tab, and then click on the Show Cookies button. Following Cookies window will appear on the screen:

In this window, all the cookies that are presently stored on your computer for Firefox are shown. Various details of these cookies, such as Name, Content, Host, Path, Expiry Date, etc., are also shown here. Cookies that belong to the same website or IP address are grouped together under a common name with a (+) sign; you can click on this (+) sign to show its grouped cookies. To see details about a particular cookie, click on that cookie. To remove or delete an individual cookie (or a group of cookies under the same website or IP address), select that cookie and then click on the Remove Cookie button (or the Remove Cookies button if it is a group of cookies). If you want to remove or delete all cookies that are presently stored in Firefox, click on the Remove All cookies button.

In this manner, Firefox gives you a much better control over cookie administration on your computer than that given by Internet Explorer.
