Change or disable the number of suggestions in Location Bar in Firefox

October 20, 2009, Category: Internet

Firefox - change the number of suggestions in location bar, or disable it When you start typing something in the Smart Location Bar in Mozilla Firefox, it will immediately start showing you URL suggestions in a drop-down list box. By default, it shows you 12 suggestions. However, you can easily change the number of these suggestions by a little tweak to its configuration; and more so, if you don’t like the suggestions, you can even disable them.

Just have a look how Firefox starts suggesting you URLs when you start typing in the location bar:

Firefox - when you start typing in location bar, it shows you URL suggestions

Firefox does not provide a direct option to change or disable the number of these 12 suggestions that appear automatically when you start typing in location bar. However, you can still disable or change this number using a little trick. To do so, proceed as under:

(1) Type about:config in the location bar of Firefox and press Enter.

Type about:config to change the number of suggestions in the location bar

(2) Firefox will warn you that “Changing these advanced settings can be harmful to the stability, security and performance of this application. You should only continue if you are sure of what you are doing.”

Firefox displays the warning when you try to change its configurations

Click on “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button to proceed further. However, please note that don’t change any values in the configurations unless you’re sure about them otherwise Firefox may start malfunctioning and there may be some security considerations too.

(3) Now, in the Filter text-box, type browser.urlbar.maxRichResults and you’ll see the following results (in fact, as you start typing in the Filter text-box, the results of the Filter start narrowing down, therefore, you may not even have to type this full expression):

Firefox - change this value to change the number of suggstions shown

It is the browser.urlbar.maxRichResults configuration field which sets the maximum number of suggestions that can be displayed in the location bar of Firefox when you start typing. As you can notice, its default value is 12. You can change this value in the screen shown to you as a result of the above query by double-clicking on the value 12. When you double-click it, you’ll get the following dialog box, where you change this value, say to 20 or whatever you like.

Firefox - number of suggestions in location bar can be changed here

Click OK after changing this value. You’ll notice that this value is now changed in the results window.

Now onwards, the maximum number of suggestions shown in the Smart Location Bar of Firefox will be as set by you here. However, you may have to restart Firefox to give effect to your changes.

If you want to completely disable the suggestions being shown when you start typing in the location bar, then change the above value of browser.urlbar.maxRichResults to -1 and then click OK. This will disable the suggestions.
