In December, 2009, Google launched Chrome for Mac and Linux operating systems (the Windows version was released earlier in 2008); and moreover, it also launched browser extensions for Chrome. These efforts appear to have paid rich dividends to Google Chrome, as now it has become the third most popular browser by usage share for the month of December, 2009, pushing Apple’s Safari browser to the fourth spot.
As per the statistics released by Net Applications that provides web metrics, Chrome now has 4.63% market share amongst all browsers for the month of December, 2009. Of course, it is far behind Internet Explorer (62.69%) and Mozilla Firefox (24.61%), as of now. But, it has gone past Safari (4.46%).

It is noteworthy that after extensions were enabled for Chrome browser around the first week of December, 2009, in a short span of about 3 weeks, it has already got a good collection of about 1275 extensions at the time of this writing. No doubt, it is far behind the figure of 7000+ add-ons for Firefox; but, it is picking up fast. The remarkable fact is that Google has itself released several useful extensions for Chrome browser.
So, over a period of time, market share of the Chrome browser is bound to increase, courtesy mainly to its lightening speed of operation, which has not slowed down even after the addition of support for extensions, as some people were expecting.
