About a month back, Google SideWiki was launched as a part of Google Toolbar, to allow you to make or view comments on any web page or any website in Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers. However, since Google Toolbar is available only for two browsers, namely, Firefox and Internet Explorer, it was not possible to make or view comments on a web page using SideWiki if you use some other browser such as Google Chrome or Safari, etc. Now, Google has released a bookmarklet that allows you to view or make comments on any web page or website using SideWiki from any browser including Google Chrome, Safari, Opera, and other browsers.
With this Sidewiki bookmarklet, you can use Google Sidewiki on any browser (including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc.), even if you don’t have the Google Toolbar installed. This bookmarklet is a small piece of code stored as a bookmark in the browser. When you click the bookmark, it will open a new window where you can write a new comment or view comments written by others in respect of the current web page.

As you may be aware, Google SideWiki allows you to make comments on any web page on the Internet in a sidebar. And, these comments can be made even if a website does not allow any comments to be made on its pages since the website owner has no control over the comments made in the sidebar through the SideWiki. Moreover, there is no question of any moderation of such comments by the website owner. Of course, the website owner can also make his own comments in response of any comments made with regard to any of his web pages, and Google will show such comments at the top of the sidebar.
So, if you’re interested in viewing or making any comments on a website or web page with the help of Google SideWiki using Google Chrome or Safari or any other browser (including IE and Firefox), you may drag the following bookmarklet to the bookmarks bar or toolbar of your browser:
Sidewiki : Drag it to bookmarks bar in your browser
If you’re not able to drag this bookmarklet to the bookmarks bar / toolbar of your browser, then try to manually create the bookmark as explained below:
(1) Download this small text file (sidewiki_bookmark.txt) containing certain code that you’ll need in step 4 below (to download it, right-click on the above link and then save the link as a file).
(2) Now, manually create a bookmark / favorite in your browser.
(3) Name the bookmark / favorite as “SideWiki” or some other suitable name.
(4) Open the above small text file (sidewiki_bookmark.txt) and copy the full code contained therein [press Ctrl + A to select all text and then press Ctrl + C to copy this selected text] and paste it into the URL (Internet Explorer and Google Chrome) or Location (Firefox) field of the bookmark editor. Then, click OK. That’s it.
Once the bookmarklet is placed in your browser as a bookmark, to make or view comments about the web page currently open in your browser, simply click on this bookmark. It will open a new window where you can make a new comment or view the comments written by others in respect of the current web page.
Have a look at the following image that displays the sidebar containing comments on the home page of Google (google.com) in the Google Chrome browser using the above bookmarklet:
