Google takes control of comments on all websites with Google Sidewiki

September 23, 2009, Category: Internet

Google Sidewiki launched - you can comment on any web page now Want to comment about a website or a particular web page and not allowed by the website owner? Or want to comment about a site which does not have comments features? Have your comments been removed by the website owner and you want to comment yet again without his permission, and very much side by side his own web site? Well, now you can do so. You can now post comments about any website or any web page irrespective of whether that site has the comments features or not; also irrespective of bothering for the approval of the website owner for your comments to appear on his site.

Now, Google has unilaterally taken control of comments on all websites in the world. It will permit you to comment on any site, any web page!!! Without approval from the website owner!!! Because it is Google that permits you to do so. And, your comments will appear right next to the concerned website or web page in the form of a side bar. This side bar is controlled by Google and not by the respective website owner. And, now Google literally takes charge of comments even on Microsoft’s website or Yahoo! website! Well, enter Google Sidewiki. Welcome to the world of free comments, sponsored by Google.

You can watch the following video from Google to learn more about Google Sidewiki:

So, what is Google Sidewiki? Well, it is a new web service from Google which allows you to contribute helpful information (i.e., comments) next to any webpage. Google Sidewiki appears as a browser sidebar, where you can read and write entries along the side of any web page. Initially, Google Sidewiki has been launched as a feature of Google Toolbar (for Firefox and Internet Explorer) and later on Google is likely to launch it for Google Chrome and other browsers too. If you want to download the Google Toolbar with Sidewiki for your Firefox or Internet Explorer browsers, you can download it from here.

Google Sidewiki will show all relevant user entries or comments in respect of any web page in a sidebar in Firefox and Internet browsers in which Sidewiki has been installed. The most relevant user entries or comments will be displayed first. Instead of displaying the most recent user entries first, Google will rank Sidewiki user comments using an algorithm that promotes the most useful and high-quality comments to the top place in the user comments. This algorithm will also take into account feedback from other users about a particular comment as also previous comments made by the same author and many other signals that Google states to have developed. You can read more on Google Research Blog about the infrastructure that Google will use for ranking all such comments on various web pages in real-time.

One does not know how successful Google Sidewiki will be. However, Sidewiki will be quite useful in one sense that you can get true and independent feedback about any web page or site (at least the popular ones) without any control by the respective website owners. A negative fallout would be that perhaps, you may see a lot of spam comments on the Sidewiki. One does not know at this initial juncture how Google will control such spam. You may also see spirited or motivated negative comments about a popular site or page by the rivals.

All said and done, at this initial juncture, all I can say is that one thing is sure. Google Sidewiki has the capacity to drastically change the way people use the Internet. So, let’s wait and watch. Meanwhile, let me try to write my own first comments using Sidewiki, while you may enjoy reading more about Google Sidewiki on another blog, especially the user comments [not on Sidewiki but very much on that blog itself]. :)
