October 14, 2009, Category: Internet

WordPress If you use WordPress to power your website and use several plugins for adding functionalities to your site, then you might have noticed automatic notifications popping up every now and then for updates being available for the plugins installed on your site. There are times when you’re satisfied about the current versions of the plugins used on your site, since you might have adjusted the settings after some experimentation. An updated or revised version of a plugin may add some odd functionality but it may also disturb the settings found convenient by you with the existing version. In fact, sometimes it is an irritant to see plugin update notifications seeking your attention every now and then.

Of course, you must keep plugins used on your WordPress site up to date; some of these updates may be enhancing the security by removing the security vulnerabilities and some others may be improving the performance. However, at the same time, there are occasions when you don’t want any distractions and would like to continue with the existing settings of the plugins installed. This may be more true in the case of administrators of multiple WordPress installations. Moreover, most of the plugin updates are minor releases and some plugins are updated so many times that an update becomes an irritant.

One plugin update available notification in WordPress dashboard

If you want to disable the plugin update notifications on your WordPress site, then you’re perhaps in need of another WordPress plugin!! Yes, there is a WordPress plugin specifically for this purpose. Disable WordPress Plugin Updates plugin will do just that. You can install it on your WordPress site. It will completely disable the plugin update checking system in WordPress powered blogs or sites. However, this plugin will work only in WordPress version 2.3 and later. The Disable WordPress Plugin Updates plugin prevents WordPress from checking for updates, and prevents any notifications from being displayed on the Plugins page of the dashboard. However, it is advisable that if you use this plugin to disable the plugin update notifications, you should keep checking for updates manually as and when felt necessary or at regular intervals so that if you find a newer version of a plugin offering you greatly improved performance you can make use of that.

This plugin is thus useful for those who feel that there is no need for the WordPress to automatically keep checking for updates every time you login to WordPress and the dashboard / plugin page is opened. This may slow down your dashboard loading. In fact, if you’re signing into WordPress dashboard several times a day, automatic checking of plugin updates may be unnecessary. Perhaps, one may check manually at regular intervals, of say a week, or at a time when there are news reports of some serious security threat. So, if you want to be in absolute control of your site and want to check for updates only when you need them, perhaps this plugin is for you.

This plugin will disable update notifications for the WordPress plugins. There are separate plugins available to disable the WordPress core update notifications as well as to disable the theme update notifications too.
