10 free online services to download and save YouTube videos

YouTube - how to download save videos to your own computer The video sharing website, YouTube, is one of the most popular sites on the web (currently, it is the fourth top site amongst all websites on the Internet, as per Alexa.com). It displays a wide variety of  video content submitted by its users, such as movie clips, TV clips, music videos, video blogging and short original videos. While only a registered member can upload video to YouTube, any person can view the video on YouTube site without being its member. However, YouTube has no feature to allow the common users to download and save video from its site to their own computers. Therefore, if you want to view YouTube video, you’ve to be online. The next time you want to view the same video, you’ll have to again be online and you can view it only on its site. Downloading video from YouTube would have saved you the trouble of going online every time even if you want to view the same video. It also costs money in the form of your bandwidth. Moreover, an online view may generally be slow with a few interruptions due to slow buffering of video data being downloaded. Of course, it depends upon your Internet connection speed. If you are able to download a YouTube video to your computer, it can save you from all these troubles. And, moreover, you’ll also be in a position to transfer the downloaded videos to your mobile phone or the media player, etc., which may otherwise have problems viewing such videos online. While YouTube does not support download and save features for its videos, there are several online services which offer free downloading of the YouTube videos for you and also allow you to save such downloaded videos on your computer. Some of the best free online services are being described in this article. These services will also work for many other popular video-sharing sites.

(1) Zamzar: This is basically a file conversion service which can convert files of various types such as document formats, image formats, music formats, video formats, compressed formats and CAD formats. Conversion of video files from one format to another is one of its many free services. However, to convert a video file to a different format, it can download a file from the popular video-sharing sites, such as YouTube, and then convert it for you which can then be saved on your computer. Thus, Zamzar is video download and conversion, both. And, of course, you can save the downloaded video from YouTube and also from other video-sharing sites such as Google Video, Revver, PutFile, Spike, Blip.tv, TeacherTube, TinyPic, Myspace, Dailymotion, Metacafe, Break.com, Apple Trailers, Tangle (GodTube), and SpikedHumor.

If you want to know more about Zamzar, see my earlier detailed article, Convert Video to other formats online & save video from popular video-sharing sites.

(2) Keepvid: It is a very simple but powerful site. Its interface is quite simple. No confusion. Simply add the YouTube URL for the video that you want to download and then click Download button, as shown in the following figure:

Keepvid will download the video and will show you two options: a low quality video and a high-quality video for the same downloaded video file. You can choose the right type of downloaded file as per your choice and requirements. Right-click on the downloaded video file link and then select Save Link as… from the context menu and name your downloaded video file with the format/extension suggested suggested by Keepvid. Thus, downloading and saving a video from YouTube is simple with Keepvid.

Keepvid - save downloaded YouTube videos in low qaulity or high quality

In fact, Keepvid makes it further simple by providing a Bookmarklet which you drag and drop on the link toolbar of your browser. So, next time you’re watching a video from YouTube, simply click on Keep it! from this bookmarklet to download and save the video.
