How to find wi-fi hotspot for any palce in the world If you’re planning to travel and browse the Internet using wi-fi during travel, then it is advisable to find the free wi-fi hotspots at or around the place of your travel in advance before you leave. More so, if you are going to a new place where you’ve not been earlier. It can help save you time, energy and money and you can also avoid inconvenience of doing a last-minute search. You have many free resources at your command to find the list of wi-fi hotspots, some of the better ones are listed below which can help you in knowing how to find these spots.

(1) JiWire is perhaps the biggest resource on the web to find out wi-fi hotspots at any place in the world. As of the time of writing this, it has a list of about 281,000 free and pay wi-fi locations in 140 countries. About 25% of these wi-fi locations (about 67,000) are in the US. However, many of these wi-fi spots are not free.

To find out details of wi-fi hotspots at a place, you can click on the map at JiWire site. But, the better way is to use the New wi-fi Search dialog box, as shown below, which can be found by clicking at more search options:

Enter the city name, street address, etc., in the above dialog box. If you want to search only for the free wi-fi hotspots, then select the Free option from Access Fee. It will show you the results accordingly. For example, my search for wi-fi spots for Los Angles revealed a list of about 500+ locations. You can see the results in a list where you get the details of the wi-fi hotspot including address, service-provider, protocol type (i.e., such as 802.11b Wi-Fi or 802.11g Wi-Fi), etc. You can also get the results in the form of a map showing the hotspots; see the following abridged image for Los Angles:

Find wi-fi hotspots on iPhone or iPod Touch using free JiWire Wi-Fi Finder application If you want to find the wi-fi spots for the iPhone or the iPod Touch, you can download JiWire’s wi-fi finder, which is a free download. JiWire’s Wi-Fi Finder covers more than 200,000 locations in 135 countries, including free and pay-access wi-fi hotspots and you can get these details on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

(2) A good web resource to find free wi-fi hotspots is Wi-Fi-FreeSpot. It has a directory listing the locations offering free wi-fi in USA State-by-State, as also in other countries. In addition to the above region-wise lists, it also provides separate lists on the basis of the service-provider companies, airports providing free wi-fi, hotels / motels / resorts providing free wi-fi, etc.

Wfi application, which is a free download, can search and automatically connect to a wi-fi hotspot (3) WeFi offers a free application that can be downloaded to your computer. It can  locate wi-fi spots around the world and can even automatically connect you to the best hotspot found in that locality. You can also download its free application for Mac, Nokia, Android and Windows Mobile devices.

(4) Wi-FiHotSpotList is yet another good resource available for this purpose. You can browse the wi-fi hotspot lists region-wise or you can find a hotspot using the following search-box:

(5) OpenWiFiSpots is also a good place to search wi-fi spots. It offers lists of only the free spots. For example, it has a list of about 36,000+ free wi-fi hotspots in the US.

(6) You can also try HotSpot Locator, or HotSpot Haven, or Wi-Fi HotSpots Directory or WiFinder which offer details of wi-fi hotspots for different locations.

There are many other resources on the Internet which can provide you details of wi-fi hotspots. Some of these resources are provided by the service-providers themselves. You can also try to search “wi-fi hotspot” on your favorite search engine with the city name and/or other useful keywords. For example, for searching for these spots in New York city, you can try searching “wi-fi hotspot new york”. Try other such imaginative keyword combinations.
