The first Beta version of Firefox 3.6 has been released by the Mozilla developer community. It is ultimately slated to replace the current Firefox 3.5.x series in next few months. This beta version of Firefox 3.6 is built on the Gecko 1.9.2 web rendering engine, with several improvements for web developers, add-on developers, and users. The current version of Firefox uses Gecko 1.9.1 engine. Several new and/or improved features have been added to Firefox 3.6, including:
- You’ll be able to change your browser’s appearance with a single click, with built in support for Personas. It may be pointed out that Personas are lightweight, easy-to-install and easy-to-change “skins” for the Firefox browser.
- Firefox 3.6 will alert you about out-of-date plugins to keep them safe. This new feature will take care of the problem that arises when old versions of plugins sometimes cause crashes and other stability problems, that can also be a significant security risk.
- You can now display open, native video on full screen, and it will also support poster frames. To display the video on full screen, simply right click on the video and then select Full Screen. And, to return to the normal view, press Esc key while on the full screen mode.
- Firefox 3.6 will support the WOFF font format. WOFF means “Web Open Font Format”. This format has two main advantages over TrueType fonts or OpenType fonts. Firstly, it is compressed, thereby reducing download sizes. Secondly, it contains information to show where the font came from and has support from a large number of font creators and font foundries.
- Improved JavaScript performance, overall browser responsiveness and startup time.
- Firefox 3.6 supports new CSS, DOM and HTML5 web technologies.
You can download Firefox 3.6 Beta 1 version from here. Before you try it, just be aware that a Beta version is not a stable version and it may cause certain unknown problems, and moreover, some add-ons may not work properly with a Beta version.
