Use Google URL Shortener through Chrome Extension or directly on web

December 17, 2009, Category: Internet

Recently, Google released a URL Shortening service that can shorten any URL and convert it into a URL beginning with “goo.gl”. However, the main difficulty with this URL Shortener is that it can be used only through Google Toolbar (available on Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox) or through FeedBurner. It cannot be used directly to shorten any URL or web address on the fly if you try to do so without using the Toolbar or FeedBurner, though Google has promised that the feature to directly shorten a URL would also be released at a later stage for “goo.gl”. However, you don’t have to wait for that official release from Google. This is so because now a third-party free web-service allows you to directly shorten any URL using Google URL Shortener; and, moreover, a Google Chrome extension has also been made available to shorten the URL of the currently displayed web page by a single click.

Use Google URL Shortening service directly on the web without toolbar:

Visit this website in any browser of your choice, and enter the URL that you want to shorten in the URL box and then click the Shorten button and your URL will be immediately shortened using Google’s “goo.gl” (see figure below):

Use Google URL Shortening service through a Google Chrome extension:

Install the goo.gl shortener + share on twitter Extension on your Google Chrome browser. On being installed, this extension will appear in the form of an icon (see figure below):

Now, to shorten the URL of the currently displayed web page in Google Chrome, simply click on this icon, and the URL will be shorted in a second using “goo.gl”. The shortened URL will be copied to the Clipboard. Moreover, this shortened URL will also be displayed in a popup box appearing just below this icon, and a Twitter icon will also be displayed along with that (see the figure below); by clicking on this icon, you can immediately tweet this web page with this shortened URL.

I tried both these services to test them and found to be quite fast and reliable.
