Google Wave is a new product from Google that is attracting a lot of media attention for last few days. In fact, it has not been launched to public in general as yet. Early this week, Google Wave was opened for limited preview release to 100,000 new users on the basis of invitations. So, everybody cannot try it. However, there is already a lot of hype created around it. There are reports that Google Wave is going to significantly change the way people communicate or interact on the Internet. Or that, it will revolutionize our communication and interaction the way it was done by email or SMS. Thus, it appears that it is already creating waves on the Internet, not by its performance as yet (very few people have actually seen or used it; and, I’m not amongst those) but by the interest it has evoked on the web.

What is Google Wave? Well, people are finding it difficult to properly explain that (or even to understand that). This is how the official Google Wave website explains what is Wave:
“A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.
A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.
A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.”

Look, how TechCrunch is trying to describe Google Wave:
“…but the truth is that as a new communication medium, it’s hard to describe exactly what Wave is. It’s kind of like email meets instant messaging meets real-time sharing and collaboration, but even that description is lacking. Eventually, if Wave takes off, it’s probably one of those things that will just be understood for being what it is, even if no one can really describe it by relating it to something else.”
Still confused. Don’t worry. You are not alone. Most people have not been able to (fully) understand Google Wave so far. OK, try to see this official video from Google; it may perhaps help you understand what Google Wave is about:
Or, try watching this official tech video from Google:
Got some idea? Well, now try another video to understand what Google Wave can do; and this one is not from Google (it is from Epipheo Studios):
Or, better still, wait for a few more months when Google Wave would be launched officially for the general public. Like all other Google products, it will also be a free service, I can safely guess.
