Microsoft beats Google on Internet too!

November 8, 2009, Category: Internet

Worldwide Internet usage Microsoft, the undisputed leader in desktops, courtesy its Windows operating system and Microsoft Office product, is far ahead of Google even in the field of Internet too! So, is it a myth that Google lords over Internet? May be. Provided the figures released by comScore, a company that measures the digital world, are considered to be fully reliable.

Google has a large number of free Internet products and services and it keeps adding to this list at a breath-taking pace. If there is nothing new to add to its list of Internet products and services for some time, Google will at least keep releasing some updates (even if those be minor tweaks) at least once in every two days or so. Google Search drives the Internet with about two-thirds market share of all searches made on the Internet, while all other search engines put together (including Microsoft’s Bing) have a collective share of only one-third. Microsoft appears to have a limited number of Internet properties vis-à-vis Google. So, it appears as if Google is far ahead of Microsoft at least in Internet.

No, that’s not correct. Says, a study by comScore, which is supposedly a leader in measuring the digital world. Its latest study shows that Microsoft sites captured nearly 15% of the total time spent online worldwide on the Internet on all sites in September, 2009, making it the most engaging global Internet property. Google, says this comScore study, is a distant second with all Google sites capturing only about 9.3% of the total minutes spent on the Internet on all sites. And, even in 2008, during the same period, Microsoft was at the top position in this regard.

As per a Press release issued by comScore, nearly 27 billion hours were spent on the Internet globally in September 2009, by a record online population of 1.2 billion Internet users of age 15 and older. All Microsoft sites captured about 3.9 billion hours out of this total time spent whereas all Google sites captured only about 2.5 billion hours of this figure. It may be pointed out that Microsoft’s Windows Live Messenger represented nearly 70% of time spent on the Microsoft websites during the month. Yahoo! sites are at number three while Facebook comes at number four. Here is a complete list of top ten Internet leaders, as per comScore, on the basis of the time spent on their websites during September, 2009:

The only consolation for Google is that its share has increased at a marginally higher rate of 48% over the same period during 2008, while for Microsoft this increase was at 43%.
