Twitter’s biggest Brand Ambassador – President Obama – says he never used Twitter

November 16, 2009, Category: Internet

President Obama says he never used Twitter President Barack Obama has been perhaps the biggest unofficial Brand Ambassador for Twitter. That President Obama is one of the Twitterers has added to the prestige and stature of Twitter. He has 2.6 million followers on Twitter and he himself follows 700,000+ persons on Twitter. In fact, he has sent 418 tweets till date. And, his Twitter account already finds mention in as many as 22,000+ lists on Twitter, in spite of the fact that lists were introduced on Twitter just a few days back. Moreover, his Twitter account shows that it is a “Verified Account”. His Twitter statistics can be envy of any Twitter user. That the most powerful man on earth uses Twitter has been a highly publicized fact that has boosted the fortunes of Twitter, directly or indirectly. But, now, President Obama states that he has never used Twitter!!!!!!!

Before I quote from President Obama’s shocking statement, just have a look at the following image taken from his Twitter Account that displays his Twitter statistics mentioned above (click on the following image to view enlarged image):

Now, President Obama is quoted to have stated, “I have never used Twitter…”. During his visit to China, he was asked by a student, “Do you know about the great firewall and should we be able to use Twitter?” Apparently, the student was referring to the fact that Twitter is banned in China. While replying to this question, President Obama stated as above that he has never used Twitter. This meeting was streamed live on White House website.

Following is the full text of his statement with regard to Twitter as displayed on the official White House website:

“PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, first of all, let me say that I have never used Twitter. I noticed that young people — they’re very busy with all these electronics. My thumbs are too clumsy to type in things on the phone. But I am a big believer in technology and I’m a big believer in openness when it comes to the flow of information. I think that the more freely information flows, the stronger the society becomes, because then citizens of countries around the world can hold their own governments accountable. They can begin to think for themselves. That generates new ideas. It encourages creativity.”

So, who has been using his Twitter account as proxy on his behalf? His staff officers? Who used his Twitter account during his election campaign last year? But, why this fact was not disclosed earlier and why it is disclosed now at this stage?

All his followers, those who were being followed by him, other Twitterers and Twitter itself, must be disappointed greatly. Is it a setback for Twitter? A huge setback in its popularity? What do you think? Didn’t you also use to believe that President Obama used to tweet himself?
