Sometimes you may like to save web pages for offline reading when you expect that you may not have access to the Internet for next few days or hours. For example, you’re going to a remote place where Internet may not be available. Or, you’re expected to take an international flight or a train journey for long hours. Saving web pages to your hard disk is a feature available in all browsers. Simply by pressing the Ctrl + S keys together, you can save your currently open web page in most browsers; of course, you’ll have to select the file names, file type and folder for saving the web page to your computer. However, if you’re using Mozilla Firefox browser, you can use the free ScrapBook add-on for faster saving of web pages with a single click and moreover, you’ll get several extra features for capturing web pages, capturing the whole website, editing captured web pages, searching text in the captured web pages, etc.
Installing ScrapBook as an add-on / extension in Firefox helps you to save web pages in a convenient manner and also to manage the collection of these saved web pages. Generally, the quality of capturing a web page through ScrapBook is better than that when you save a web page through the normal method of Ctrl + S, in as much as ScrapBook will capture the web page exactly as it is. It offers speed, accuracy and ease of operation.
Capturing a web page:
ScrapBook allows you to save a web page by right-clicking anywhere in the web page and then selecting Capture Page from the context menu. The web page is automatically saved in the default directory. See the following image (click on the image to view the full-size image):
Alternatively, ScrapBook allows you to save a web page by dragging and dropping its favicon in the location bar or in the browser tab into the ScrapBook Sidebar. See the following image for this action (click on the image to view the full-size image):
Capturing only selected text in a web page:
You can also use ScrapBook to save some selected text in a Web page instead of saving the whole web page. This can be useful if you’ve already read the web page and want to save only its relevant portion. You can save the selected text by right-clicking and then clicking on Capture Selection from the context menu. Alternatively, you can save selection in a Web page by the action of drag-and-drop into ScrapBook Sidebar.
Directly capturing web links in a web page:
A web page may have several links (to other web pages) in it which can also be saved directly by right-clicking on them and then selecting Capture link or by dragging and dropping them into the ScrapBook sidebar. There is no need to open these links to save them. See the following image for this purpose:
Capturing the whole website or web pages till a given depth level:
You can also capture the whole web site using the “in-depth capture” feature, which enables you to capture current page including linked pages in it in the deeper level. You can use “Depth to follow links” option to decide how many levels of links are to be captured. After capturing is completed, all these pages will be linked and a sitemap will also be generated automatically.
