Do you use more than one computer to browse the Internet? And, visit same or similar websites on such several computers? Well, then you must be facing the problem of having different bookmarks on different computers, making your browsing inconvenient since you may have to manually keep adding, deleting or editing bookmarks on all these computers separately. This may often be confusing too. But now, you’ve a better option. Google Chrome has released a new Beta version 4.0.223.16 that has a new Bookmark Sync feature that can automatically sync your bookmarks over several computers.
This new Beta version of Google Chrome can be downloaded from here. This feature is likely to be added in the future regular versions of Chrome.
What is Bookmark Sync?
Bookmark Sync is a feature that can help your browser bookmarks to be automatically synchronized on your multiple computers. This can be useful and convenient if you often use the same websites on different computers / laptops.
In fact, Google Chrome will synchronize your bookmarks on your several computers with the help of your (free) Google Account. You can easily create a new free Google Account if you don’t have it already.
How to use Bookmark Sync with Google Chrome?
(1) Firstly, you’ll have to install the new Google Chrome Beta 4.0.223.16 (or later version supporting Bookmark Sync feature) on all the computers / laptops where you want to sync the bookmarks.
(2) You should have a Google Account. Or, first create a free Google Account as mentioned above.
(3) Now you Enable Sync on each such computer by using following steps:
(4) As mentioned above, follow this procedure for each computer for which you want to sync the bookmarks.
That’s it! Now, your bookmarks are synchronized on all your computers on Google Chrome.
In fact, if you’ve enabled this Sync feature on a particular computer, all your Google Chrome bookmarks on that computer are saved in your Google Account. Therefore, when you enable sync on a second computer by logging in to the same Google Account, Google Chrome will take the bookmarks from this second computer and will merge them with the bookmarks in your Google Account that already exist due to the first computer. It is this combined set of bookmarks that will then be displayed on the bookmarks bar on both your computers that have been synced to your same Google Account. Likewise, if you enable sync on more computers with the same Google Account, bookmarks on those computers will also be synced using the same procedure.
Other facts about Bookmark Sync on Google Chrome:
After synchronizing your bookmarks in the above manner, you can add, edit, or delete your bookmarks on any synced computer in the normal manner within your Google Chrome browser. This will make changes to your bookmarks in your associated Google Account automatically. Therefore, the changes made by you to your bookmarks on one computer will be automatically reflected immediately on the other computers where you’ve enabled the sync feature.
Please note that all your bookmarks associated with your Google Account will also appear in a new folder called “Google Chrome” in your Google Docs associated with that account. This will enable you to access your bookmarks on a different browser or computer, by just visiting your Google Docs. At this juncture, you cannot remove the “Google Chrome” bookmarks folder from your Google Docs after it gets added automatically as mentioned above; moreover, you can’t edit your bookmarks folder directly from within Google Docs. If you want to make changes to your bookmarks, then you’ve to add, edit or delete them from the Google Chrome browser on any of your synced computers. This will automatically update your bookmarks folder on your Google Docs.
However, be careful if several persons use Google Chrome on the same computer within the same Windows user account. If somebody else signs in to the sync feature with his own (different) Google Account on your computer, your bookmarks on that computer will be added to that person’s Google Docs.
