Now you’ll be able to watch 1080p HD (high definition) videos in full resolution on YouTube. Depending on the resolution of the original source, the HD mode of YouTube will now support viewing videos either in 720p or in 1080p format. It is pertinent to note that it will be much higher resolution than the existing YouTube’s HD mode support of a maximum output of 720p only.
It may be pointed out that 1080p is the short form for a specific category of HDTV (high definition TV) video modes. It means full high definition or full HD that has 1920×1080 pixels resolution. Here, “1080” stands for 1080 lines of vertical resolution, and “p” stands for progressive scan which means that the picture is not interlaced. For the widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, 1080p implies a horizontal resolution of 1920 pixels (i.e., 1080*16/9 = 1920). Thus, 1080p implies a frame resolution of 1920×1080.
The above change has been announced by YouTube in view of the fact that resolution of the consumer cameras has increased. Those amongst you who have larger monitors and a fast computer, can now switch to 1080p mode to get the most out of the full-screen experience while viewing videos from YouTube. Of course, the original video must be in the 1080p format. In fact, YouTube has announced that whatever videos have already been uploaded in 1080p format which were being shown in 720p format till now, would also be re-encoded in due course of time to show them in 1080p format.
Some latest laptops have a 15″, 17″ or 18.4″ screen display that can natively run a resolution of 1920×1200 or 1920×1080. In fact, there are even larger LCD wide-screen display sizes from 23″ to 27″ using 1920×1200 resolution as their native resolutions. There are even bigger screen sizes of 30″ that can display even 1600p videos with a much higher resolution.
Likewise, there are HD cameras that can produce 1080p HD videos.
So, if you’ve such latest devices for watching 1080p HD videos or for producing such high-resolution videos, go and take advantage of the new YouTube features by watching such videos or by uploading such videos for the benefit of others.
