YouTube to telecast live Indian Premium League Cricket Matches

January 20, 2010, Category: Internet

The YouTube has entered into a two-year tie-up with the Indian Premium League (IPL) to telecast live all the 60 cricket matches of the third IPL season starting from March 12, 2010. It appears to be the first time for YouTube to telecast live a sports activity. It is reported that this live streaming telecast on YouTube will be with a delay of 5 minutes. Under the terms of the agreement, Google will have the exclusive online rights for IPL match contents. Moreover, Google and IPL would share the revenues from sponsorships and advertising on http://www.youtube.com/ipl, which will be the web address for live streaming matches.

It may be noted that cricket is the most popular sports in India and the Indian Premium League that consists of cricket matches in the Twenty20 format has been very successful in its first two seasons. However, cricket is popular only in about 10-15 countries. The YouTube tie-up will help the IPL to make live telecast of its matches become available globally via Internet even at such places where cricket is not that popular or where the live TV telecast cannot reach.
