Why is it so hard to get a virus when you are actually looking for one, I have done everything, clicked adds, installed rogues (was able to fully uninstall them, so they don’t count), and have gone into known malicious links! it is so easy to get one if you aren’t looking for one, does anyone know how to get a virus???!!!
Well, it is not that I want a virus. It’s a help call given by a user at a public forum recently (I’ve modified the language slightly). You may be wondering why should somebody be interested to get a virus, when what most people want is to have something anti-virus. OK, as that user herself informed she wanted a virus to test the anti-virus software.
Frankly speaking I doubt whether that could be the real intention. If you’re a lay person and don’t have even a single virus in your stock, then why should you try to test an anti-virus software? Let this work be done by the experts and you as a lay person should trust the word of reputed experts and use the best possible anti-virus software or may be a combination of anti-virus software. On the other hand, if you’re already an expert in testing an anti-virus software, then there must already be many viruses in your “safe” custody; so, why should you ask for a single virus? I think the above question may be just by way of entertainment. Or, may be to test the knowledge of people to find out where the viruses are. Or, just out of curiosity.
Anyway. Look at the answers given to the above call for virus.
So, there is a lot of expert advice. May be it is a common experience as to where do viruses come from. Yet, it is strange that (knowing fully well) people use the very same methods and get affected by new viruses every now and then!
Will you click on a Google ad, if it asks you like this:
“Is your PC virus-free? Get it infected here!”
Well, 409 people clicked on it, when this ad was run by Didier Stevens, though his intention was just to demonstrate that the advertising system can be a good source for everyone including those who have a malicious objective. But, just see, how computer viruses have “infected” our minds too.
Coming back to the original question “I want a virus, please…”, just out of curiosity, I Googled “where to get a virus”, and got tons of search results giving various suggestions. Just to quote from one particular search result, I am supplementing the above list “from where to get viruses” by the methods which are not listed above:
Also see this page and other related pages at Wikipedia. Further, try searching “prevention from viruses”, “protection against viruses”, to know more about sources of viruses and how they spread.
Are you also interested to get a virus? No? OK, then try to avoid the above sources (and many other suspicious sources) from where the viruses spread and do it scrupulously!!!
