GIF files or the Graphics Interchange Format files are the image files that support animation and are popular for logos and graphics with animation. However, the GIF format does not have an efficient compression technique unlike, say, PNG format. Due to this reason, a GIF image file can be quite big in size. It is here that compression of a GIF file with an optimizer can be useful since it can drastically reduce its file size. Trout’s GIF Optimizer is a free software that can reduce the file size of a GIF file by compressing it. However, it may be pointed out that you may not be able to reduce the file size of every GIF file using this software, since some GIF files are already optimally compressed. But, many GIF files can be reduced in size by even up to 90% using this utility.
For example, have a look at the following figure that shows the results of running this utility on a folder containing GIF files on my computer. As you can notice, one of the GIF files was reduced in size by up to 90% while another file was reduced by about 53% in size.
Thus, Trout’s GIF Optimizer can create smaller GIF files from your existing GIF files, without any appreciable reduction in the picture quality. It is advisable to backup your files before reducing their file size, though the software will check before overwriting the file. This software can also convert other graphics files (such as, BMP, JPG, ICO, WMF, EMF files) to GIF files. It allows you to preview optimized GIF files.
Open files using the Open button or by dragging and dropping files into the GIF Optimizer to use the software, and then Save the files. You can even drag-and-drop multiple files to the GIF Optimizer. You can use it on an entire folder also. Moreover, using the Select Folder button, you can use it to recursively search for graphics files to optimize through subfolders.
