In Windows XP, you had free Outlook Express as the desktop email client. In Windows Vista, Outlook Express was replaced by Windows Mail. Now, in Windows 7, the latest operating system from Microsoft, does not have either, i.e., it does not have either Outlook Express or Windows Mail. Moreover, there is no other pre-installed replacement software in place of these software. However, there is, in fact, a replacement software for Windows 7, called Windows Live Mail, but it is not pre-installed in Windows 7; you’ve to download it and install it yourself. It is free to download.

You can freely download Windows Live Mail from this Microsoft site. As mentioned above, Windows Live Mail does in Windows 7, what Outlook Express did in Windows XP and what Windows Mail did in Windows Vista. That is, managing all your mail in one program as a desktop email client. Windows Live Mail allows you to get multiple e-mail accounts such as Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo! (Yahoo! Mail Plus version and NOT the free Yahoo! Mail version) and other email accounts in one desktop program. Moreover, Windows Live Mail also supports a calendar.
In fact, Windows Live Mail is downloaded as a part of “Windows Live” that includes not only “Mail” component but also other useful software. Windows Live consists of the following software:
All these software components can be downloaded free from the above Microsoft site as part of Windows Live.
In fact, the free Windows Live works not only on the new Windows 7 operating system, but it also works on Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008. Check the other minimum requirements for running Windows Live on these older versions of Windows at the above download site. So, feel free to download Windows Live not only for Windows 7 operating system, but also for your older XP or Vista operating systems.
