How to insert YouTube video in a WordPress blog

Inserting YouTube video in WordPress blog Do you want to embed a YouTube video in your WordPress powered blog or website? Okay. There are three methods of doing it. Let’s see how it can be achieved. One good thing about inserting a YouTube video in your blog is that you don’t have to host the video yourself on your web server; the video will continue to be hosted on YouTube, so you won’t have hosting or bandwidth worries. The video will run on your website directly from the YouTube website. Moreover, you can also customize the width, height, etc., of the video.

Before I start with the methods, have a look at the following YouTube video that has been inserted in this web page as an illustration:

So, here are those three methods:

(A) Copy the Embed Code and Paste in HTML mode of WordPress dashboard:

The first method is as under:

(1) Open the desired video on YouTube. In the right sidebar, click on the Embed textbox; it gets highlighted. Moreover, just below the Embed textbox, several options will become available (see figure below). These options allow you to change the size of the video to be embedded, whether to show borders, whether to show HD (high definition) video, whether to include related videos, etc. As you change the options, the code in the Embed textbox will automatically change to match your options. Now, copy this code from the Embed text box by selecting / highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl + C keys together.

(2) Login to the dashboard of your WordPress blog. Add a new post wherein you want to insert or embed the YouTube video. Add whatever other text / images you want in the post. Shift to the HMTL mode in the dashboard by clicking on the HTML button, i.e., this means that you’re NOT in the Visual mode (see figure below). Press Ctrl + V keys to paste the copied code at the desired place in the body of the post as shown in the figure below:

WordPress - paste the YouTube Embed code

Now, you can publish your post. You can load the new post / web page in your browser by typing its web address and it will contain the YouTube video that you embedded in this web page.

(B) Inserting the YouTube video’s URL in the “Insert / edit Embedded Media” screen of WordPress dashboard:

(Note: This second method may not work in some older versions of WordPress.)

(1) Open the desired video on YouTube. In the right sidebar, this time click on the URL textbox; it gets highlighted. Now, copy this code from the URL text box by selecting / highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl + C keys together.

YouTube - copy the URL code

(2) Login to the dashboard of your WordPress blog. Add a new post wherein you want to insert or embed the YouTube video. Add whatever other text / images you want in the post. Shift to the Visual mode in the dashboard by clicking on the Visual button. Now, click on the “Show/hide Kitchen Sink” button (see figure below):

WordPress dashboard - show the second toolbar

A second toolbar will become visible now. In the body of the post, click the place where you want to insert the video and then on this second toolbar, click on the “Insert / edit embedded media” button (see figure below):

WordPress dashboard - click on the "Insert / edit embedded media" button

A new dialog box, called “Insert / edit embedded media”, will appear on the screen. Select the General tab. In the Type field, select Flash. In the File/URL field, press Ctrl + V keys together to paste the YouTube video code that you had copied earlier. Enter the dimensions of the video (in fact, the moment you insert the code, the dimensions may perhaps be automatically filled in). This dialog box will now appear like the following (the actual screen may differ slightly):

WordPress - insert / edit embedded media

Now, click on the Insert button. This dialog box will close and the YouTube video will get inserted at the desired place in your WordPress post.

You can publish your post now. Your post will contain the YouTube video that you embedded in this web page.

(3) Using WordPress plugins to insert YouTube video in a post:

Several WordPress plugins (such as “Smart YouTube”, “WP YouTube”, and many others) are available to insert YouTube videos in your WordPress posts. Frankly speaking, I’ve not tried these plugins since I always use the direct method to insert videos in my posts. You can visit this WordPress YouTube Query Page that displays several such plugins in several search results pages.

Thus, inserting a YouTube video is an easy process. In fact, in a similar manner, using almost similar methods, you can also insert other videos (such as Vimeo, Google Video, Metacafe, etc.) in your WordPress blog.
