WordPress is the most popular content management system for blogs. It is used on millions for sites. Not many people are aware that you can create even a micro-blog using WordPress that will be just like a Twitter-clone, with the big difference being that you can yourself host that micro-blog for your own users without using Twitter. What you need for hosting such a micro-blog is WordPress software and a special P2 theme, both of which are freely available for download and can be used on your own website. Your users will be able to indulge into Twitter-like real-time conversions directly from the home page of your micro-blogging site. You’ll have inline comments on your home page and with a posting form on the home page of the site itself. The real-time updates of the comments will be without even reloading the page. Moreover, unlike Twitter, you’ll have threaded conversation. Further, you also get the advantage of having tagged conversations, that can make it easy to search them using tags.

I used the P2 theme for a while but had to trash it because it was using up too many resources on my server, my hosting company kept shutting down the site saying it was causing an overload on the server. I only had two twitter feeds at the time and was making use of FeedWordpress to integrate one twitter account with the other one being used by P2… although it was short it was impressive, especially with the inline comments.
