BitMeter 2 - monitor your Internet bandwidth usage If you want to monitor your Internet bandwidth usage, you can try BitMeter 2, which is a bandwidth meter that enables visual monitoring of your Internet connection in real-time by displaying a scrolling graph showing your upload and download speeds over time. These speeds are updated every second graphically and are also displayed numerically in the lower part of a small floatable window as shown in the adjoining figure.

BitMeter is absolutely free and is an open-source software. It requires Microsoft .Net 1.1 or above which can be downloaded free and is generally already installed on most of the latest Windows machines. BitMeter also allows you to check the historical data of your Internet usage. Just have a look at the following image to see your Internet usage over the last few hours, days or months. You can also view the data numerically instead of seeing that in graphical form and can also export it to a spreadsheet for detailed analysis.

The main graph of BitMeter is a floating window; it can be made always-on-top window and can thus be made always visible; it can also be made partially transparent which will enable you to see through it.

If your Internet package has certain usage limits or speed limits, you can use the Alerts feature in BitMeter that can notify you when you have uploaded/downloaded a certain amount of data, or if your speed goes above or below any limit that you specify in the options. Similarly, you can also enter details of monthly quota of your bandwidth usage and it will warn you when you approach the limit specified by you. BitMeter also includes an on-screen Stopwatch which can be configured to display a lot of information such as upload and download totals, and average, maximum and minimum speeds.

It supports many other features and is customizable; the Settings screen alone has more than 80 different options for you to select; just have a look at the following image:

You’ll find BitMeter particular useful if your bandwidth package has certain limits imposed on its usage. It can also enable you to check the download and upload speed which you can then compare with what was promised to you by your ISP to find out whether you are getting the correct speed.
