In Microsoft Office 2007, the Word files are saved with the default .docx file extension. However, in the earlier versions of Microsoft Office, the Word files were saved with .doc extension. If you receive a Word file with .docx extension which has been saved with Office 2007, you cannot open it with earlier versions of Microsoft Office. How to open such .docx files without having Microsoft Office 2007?
Well, Microsoft has itself provided a solution by making available Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats, which can be downloaded freely. So, just download this compatibility pack on your computer and install it. It will enable you to open, edit, and save Office 2007 files (including the .docx files) in the older versions of Microsoft Office. This compatibility pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in the new Office 2007 formats.
You have another option to open .docx files. You can upload your .docx file to the Docx Converter, which is a free online service, and it will convert this file into the older version .doc file. It will send you an email with the link address to the converted file.
