Translate any web page in Firefox with a click using Google Toolbar

October 2, 2009, Category: Internet, Software

Google Toolbar for Firefox has added translation feature Google has announced today a new version of its Google Toolbar for Mozilla Firefox that will allow you to translate any web page currently displayed into more than 40 languages. You won’t have to leave that web page and go to any other site for translating that page into a language of your choice. Google Toolbar will carry out advanced-in-page translation within the same page and within the same tab of Firefox with just a single click on the Translate button on the Toolbar. Moreover, it can also show you the meaning of a particular word in English in a language of your choice by just hovering the mouse over that word. It may be pointed out that Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer already supports translation feature.

You can download the latest version of Google Toolbar with this new feature from here. This latest version of Google Toolbar for Firefox has some other new features such as more support for Private Browsing mode of Firefox, and displaying high-quality website suggestions and sponsored links as you type your query.

(A) Translate a full web page in another language:

Have a look at the following image showing the Translate button in the Google Toolbar in Firefox:

You have to simply click on the above Translate button to translate the currently displayed web page in Firefox into the language of your choice. Moreover, if you change your preferred translation language, the Google Toolbar will remember your language preferences and will use them when translating pages in future. When you visit a web page in a different language than that of your Google Toolbar, it will display the translation bar near the top of Firefox window and will ask you if you would like to translate the page. Click the Translate button to translate the page into that language. Just have a look at the following translated page:

Notice that after translating the page, the Toolbar shows you an extra bar under it, with a language drop-down list-box from which you can select another language to translate the page into that other language. Or else, you can click Show original button to revert the page back into the original language.

(B) Translate a word into another language just by hovering mouse over it:

You can enable quick translation of a word into language of your choice by showing a tool-tip just below that word when you hover the mouse over it. Have a look at the following image to see how Google Toolbar showed the meaning of the word “course” in Spanish language when I hovered the mouse over this word:

To enable this feature, click on the Wrench button on the Google Toolbar (see image below):

This will open the Google Toolbar Options dialog box. Click the Tools tab and it will show the Translate option as one of the customizable options. The following image shows the relevant part of this dialog box:

Click on Edit link (with a plus sign before it). It will show more details now as shown in following image:

Put a check mark in the check-box saying Translate English words by hovering over them, and then select the language from the drop-down list-box. Now, click Save button to save your options.

That’s it! Now the moment you hover your mouse on any English word in a web page open in Firefox, Google Toolbar will quickly show its meaning in the language selected by you by displaying a tool-tip below it, as shown in a figure above.

Automatic translation of web pages:

You can also select the option of translating pages automatically. You can update your automatic translation preferences in the Toolbar Options window by clicking the Wrench icon. To enable or disable automatic page translation, proceed as under:

· Click the Wrench icon on the Google Toolbar.

· On the Tools tab, click the Edit link in the Translate section.

· Select or deselect the Offer page translation checkbox. Now, click Save.

I use google translate service and gtranslate firefox addon, which i found very useful.

With gTranslate you can translate any text in a webpage just by selecting and right-clicking over it.

How can you all just give in to Google.
I find some of their stuff useful – but give us a choice!!!!
Even without their toolbar installed, pages will pop-up a suggested translation from google – so annoying!
    Give us a break, Google!

I very much like the feature of hovering over an english word (my primary) language for an instant tranlsation into a chosen language; however, I am not always reading in english. My other language is french. Often I am reading french text and would like to hover over a word for the english translation. Presently I cant do that. The google toolbar is only set up to tranlate english into another language

Wish you would expand the flexbility
