
Microsoft Windows 7 supports themes and allows their easy customization. It also allows you to easily create your own themes. A theme in Windows 7 is a combination of pictures, colors, and sounds on your computer, and these inlcude a desktop background, a screen saver, a window border color, and a sound scheme. Desktop icons and mouse pointers may also be included in some themes. So, basically creating or customizing a theme means creating or changing these elements of a theme and collecting them as a theme. A nice theme of your liking can make your work on Windows 7 pleasant and enjoyable, more so if you work on your computer for several hours a day.
How to create or customize your own theme?
In Windows 7, you can easily change elements of a theme such as the pictures, colors, and sounds, and then save the revised theme as your new theme. You can add your own pictures, etc., to your new theme. In fact, you can also use a group of pictures as a slide show for your desktop background wallpaper in Windows 7 as part of your theme.

To change elements of a theme to make your own theme or customize the theme, proceed as under:
(1) Click on the Start button, and then click on Control Panel. In the search box, type “personalization”, and then click Personalization. This will open Personalization.
(2) Select the theme that you want to modify to apply it to your desktop. Click on a theme to select it.
(3) Click on Desktop Background to change the background picture. Select the check box for the image that you want to use as the background picture, and then click Save changes.

(4) Click on Screen Saver to add or change a screen saver. Select an item in the Screen saver list. Change the settings of the screen saver as per your choice. Click OK for saving these changes.
(5) Click on Window Color to change the color of the window borders for your theme. Select the color that you want to use by clicking on it, make changes to the intensity as required. Now click Save changes.

(6) Click on Sounds for changing the sounds for your theme. Select an item in the Sound Schemes list as per your choice, and then click OK.
(7) The theme that you’ve created thus will now appear under My Themes as an unsaved theme.

(8-A) If you want to save this theme only for your own use, then click on this theme to apply it to your desktop. Click on Save theme, enter a name for this theme, and then click Save. Please remember that that you cannot share the theme saved like this with your friends or others. This theme will be saved in “My Themes” folder.
(8-B) On the other hand, if you want to be able to share this new / revised theme with your friends and others, then you’ve to save it in a slightly different manner. Click on the theme that you’ve created or modified using steps above, to apply it to the desktop. Now, right-click on the theme, and then click Save theme for sharing. Enter a name for this theme in the File name box, and then click on Save. This theme will now be saved in your “My Documents” folder. You can share this theme with others. To add this sharable theme to your collection of themes, double-click on it.
That’s it! Your new theme is now ready for use in Windows 7.
