In an earlier article, I’ve discussed as to how even your deleted files can be recovered or restored using a free Restoration utility (also see, this article). Such deleted can be recovered in many cases even if these files have also been deleted or emptied from the Recycle Bin. Please read the detailed reasoning in that article. In this article, I am discussing about another free and open-source software that can help you recover your deleted files if you’ve accidentally deleted them and now you want to restore them. [On the other hand, if you’re interested to learn how to permanently delete files from your computer so that they could never be recovered, then please read my earlier article Permanently delete your files and their contents.]
This free software is NTFS Undelete that allows you to recover your deleted files. It may be in a position to recover the deleted files directly from the hard disk of your computer or laptop even if you’ve emptied your Recycle Bin. However, it may not be possible to recover all deleted files; it depends on the fact whether the memory space occupied by them on your computer has already been overwritten by some other file or application. The chances to recover the deleted files improve if you try to recover it immediately after it is accidentally deleted.

In case you’ve accidentally deleted a file, and want to recover it immediately thereafter, you should try to ensure that no program writes to the drive or partition where this deleted file is located since a program may overwrite the memory space where this deleted file is located.
NTFS Undelete utility comes in three forms:
(1) Windows Installer: It will set up the NTFS Undelete software on your computer. However, the software in this form can be used only when the files you want to undelete are not located on the system drive, which is normally “C” drive. Therefore, if the deleted files are located on the system disk, then you should choose a different method of installation of this software.
(2) ISO Image: This ISO image of the NTFS Undelete software can be burned / copied to a CD or DVD on any computer. Thereafter, when you want to undelete some deleted files, insert the disk in the computer on which the undeleted files are located, to use this software. This method of installation of NTFS Undelete will be useful even if your deleted files are located on the system disk (i.e., where the Windows system files are installed, which is normally “C” drive).
(3) ZIP Archive: This is the third option to install NTFS Undelete which is useful if you are sure about location on your computer where you can unzip the executable files of NTFS Undelete without damaging the deleted files that you wish to undelete. So, download the Zip Archive version and unzip the files to a folder, then run the executable file. You can also extract these files to an external media, such as USB drive.
All the above three versions are available on the website of NTFS Undelete. You can download the desired version free. It is perhaps better to use the ISO image or Zip Archive version on a CD/DVD or USB drive, respectively, so that the deleted files located even on the system drive could be recovered.
